Game review: Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition

IF you missed the cult zombie game first time around, you can pick up this superb Game of the Year re-pack that comes complete with all of developer Techland’s expansion elements bundled out of the box.

Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition

£29.99, PC/PS3/Xbox 360

The game is set on the holiday island of Banoi and you play one of four survivors of a zombie outbreak. You must work together to escape alive while completing quests, earning new abilities and letting rip with a variety of weapons.

An action role-playing game at heart, you must manage your inventory of weapons and supplies, level up and craft tools using workbenches. Some of the weapon creation is absolutely insane, such as electrified chainsaws, acidic sledgehammers
and more.

When you’re not fashioning weapons of mass destruction you can complete quests to earn money and experience, or team up with friends to tackle the Bloodbath Arena DLC, which throws you into a deadly game of survival.

The second DLC pack is Ryder White, which focuses on the role of Dead Island’s key protagonist and his attempts to quell the zombie outbreak on Banoi before it spreads. It’s not the best expansion pack out there, but it does come free on the disc, so it’s hard to complain.

Dead Island isn’t a perfect game, but if you like the horror genre, and you know a few friends with a copy, there is much fun to be had in running around as a team and busting some undead heads over an afternoon.
