Gallery in appeal to art-lovers ahead of Colourist exhibition

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art has launched an appeal for owners of paintings by the celebrated Scottish Colourist SJ Peploe to come forward.

Following the success of its exhibition devoted to the work of Peploe’s friend, FCB Cadell, the gallery plans a major retrospective of Peploe’s work, opening in November.

Curators are interested in uncovering rarely seen works by one of the most important Scottish artists of the 20th century.

During his lifetime, Peploe exhibited his works regularly in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

It is possible the children and grandchildren of his friends and patrons may well still own these works and the gallery hopes to rediscover some long-hidden masterpieces.

Samuel John Peploe, who lived from 1871 to 1935, was the eldest of the four artists popularly known as the Scottish Colourists, the others being Cadell, George Leslie Hunter and John Duncan Fergusson.

Peploe was born in Edinburgh and lived here for most of his life, except for periods spent in France, most significantly in Paris.
