Five unusual Scottish marriage proposals

MARRIAGE proposals are special regardless of setting. However, that doesn’t stop some people from going the extra mile.

Some like to take trips away, others like to do it in rooms full of friends and family, and others do so in a way that it goes viral on the internet.

Here are five unusual Scottish proposals from recent years.

Times Square, NY

Not unusual if you’re from the Big Apple, more so if you’re a 28-year old goalkeeper from Edinburgh. Former Hibernian stopper Sean Murdoch managed to star in a viral video when he enlisted the help of six dancers, along with Bruno Mars’s smash-hit Marry You as the soundtrack, to propose to long-term girlfriend Charissa Ferguson. The video can be watched here. Warning: includes cringe-inducing dance moves.

Incredibly, Murdoch wasn’t the first Scotsman to execute such a complex proposal. Glaswegian Bobby Beattie’s gesture for his girlfriend Laura Meikle included bringing Braehead shopping centre to a standstill as 10 window shoppers suddenly started breaking out the dance moves before Bobby got down on one knee. The similarities don’t stop there. Marry You by Bruno Mars was once more the song of choice. Bobby can claim bragging rights because he made his proposal to first, though Times Square probably trumps Braehead.

Hampden Park

Nothing says romance quite like having the question asked by a stranger with a microphone. Incredibly, proposals at sporting arenas are fairly common, especially if both partners share a devotion to the same team. Plus there the added touch of making a grand gesture in front of thousands of people, proudly showing off how in-love you are. Although, it can end horribly. One Hibs supporter had his wedding proposal read out at half-time in the 2012 Scottish Cup Final. She said yes, but the fan may wish to erase the rest of that day from his memory.

The Forth Road Bridge

There’s nothing obviously romantic about a man made structure designed to ferry traffic back and forth between Edinburgh and Fife, but you cannot deny the stunning view from the Forth Road Bridge, particularly if you are facing east toward the spectacular rail bridge. It was at this vantage point where Paul Brannigan got down on one knee to pop the question to girlfriend Hazel Andrews in November last year. A picture of the pair was taken by a passer-by and a quick, yet successful, internet campaign was soon launched to discover their identities.

Glasgow Central Station

Not since the days when kids dreamed of Thomas the Tank Engine and Emily hooking up has there been any sorted of intimacy associated with trains. However, for Stean Kurt Kinley it was the perfect spot to proposal to girlfriend Hannah Brearley-Jones last year. The pair had just completed a 400 mile walk from London to Glasgow for charity when Stean defied his aching legs to get down on one knee. It’s quite poetic if you think about it. The pair had just completed an arduous journey and Hannah’s “yes” meant they were about to embark on another... boom, boom.
