Festival preview: Paramore; Edinburgh Corn Exchange

Tennessee pop-punks Paramore had never had a major hit in this country until the first Twilight film used their thrashing single Decode as its theme song.

On the back of the film’s enormous success, they knocked Madonna off the top of the UK charts with third album Brand New Eyes, and they’ve never looked back since.

The band, fronted by the fiesty Hayley Williams, are currently working on their fourth album with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen, best known for his work with Beck, Nine Inch Nails, Air and M83.

“At this point, we have recorded one song with Justin,” says Williams, whose outfit visit the Corn Exchange this Tuesday on the only Scottish date of their current tour. “That time in the studio was easily the most relaxed, inspired, and liberating experience we have had in any studio thus far.

“We are huge fans of his work not only as a producer but as a musician, writer and musical director. He wears all those hats well and with a lot of humility.”

Asked what is the main inspiration behind the new record, Williams says, “I am laughing things off a lot more easily these days than I was at 19, when I wrote the last album. A lot of change - a lot of positivity.

“Even the songs with the more serious subject matter feel less toiled and troubled.

“Musically, I am most inspired by the personality captured in every instrument.

“That, to me, is actually what is making up this newer sound that is happening.”
