Fashion: Winter trenchcoats

The trenchcoat has come a long way since its humble beginnings a century ago.

A style staple for all wardrobes, it is spring’s signature look.

Trenchcoats are timeless and well worth investing in. Classic cream tones will guarantee longevity and look fantastic flung over any colour pallette.

There are fun fashion pieces you can pick up for under £30, but it is worth spending your maximum budget to ensure the coat is a constant in your wardrobe.

This is one of a handful of garments that work on all ages, shapes and sizes thanks to the coat’s belted design. It adds the illusion of an hourglass figure the moment it’s fastened round the waist.

Opt for tying the belt in a knot rather than fastening the fabric into the buckle. It looks much more chic and fits your individual body type perfectly.

There are a ton of choices on the high street at the minute. Lighten up your wardrobe and have fun with colour. Pink in all shades is big this spring. Layer variations of the colour together from bubble gum pinks to soft pastels then jar it up by adding a little orange accessory. This prevents you looking like you are heading to a Barbie convention.

Brighten up outerwear by opting for a bold-coloured trench. Red lends itself well to both day and night looks.

Olive green shades have been spotted at Milan fashion week for next season but Ted Baker is ahead of the trend with a military-inspired trench. It is on the higher end of the price scale but worth it for the fabulously fluted design at the hem.

If colour leaves you cold, head on over to the dark side. Simple black trenches are easy to come by and are perfect for a casual day in the city. A black and white polka dot adds a bit of quirk to an outfit and would look great over workwear. Last but by no means least, a snakeskin trench should spice up your style if the other coats seem too safe. Team with a statement heel and bare legs for the illusion of risky dressing without the fear of being arrested.
