Fashion: Add a dash of colour

Colour popping has the capacity to makeover the most mundane of outfits. It is also a sure-fire way of revamping anyone who has fallen into a style rut.

If black is your canvas of choice then here are a few tips and tricks to take you out of the darkness and into the light.

The Evening News style squad spent the afternoon prizing the little black dress off of girl about town Zoe Hitchen.

The 19-year-old, who hails from the New Town, was primed for a colour injecting makeover when she turned up on set in a comfortable, but cute black T-shirt dress. It was our job to convince her colour was the way to go.

The Swap

Breaking yourself in gently would be the sensible place to start. There are great panel dresses around the high street right now which marry black and colour beautifully.

I found a gorgeous frock at Godiva in the Grassmarket. This ethically-made slip comes from Kenya and is made from recycled fabric.

Godiva’s the only place in Scotland that stocks the brand, which gives it a nice unique feeling. The bright digital print background pops against the soft silk front panel without overpowering the whole appearance. This oversized shape looks very designer and will be perfect coming into summer with some chunky gladiator sandals. You could even toughen the frock up by adding leather leggings underneath while winter lingers on.

Zoe’s Verdict

This is not something I would
normally pick for myself and I was a little unsure when it was presented to me, but it looks really chic on.

Casual Colour

You don’t have to get dressed up to embrace colour popping, it doesn’t even need to be an item of clothing.

Stick on some statement jewellery and let that be the standout piece in a simple, everyday look.

Boyfriend jeans and a blazer provide the perfect backdrop for a big dose of colour round the neck or wrist.

Picking the polar opposite on the colour chart of your outfit will make the colour pop much more obvious to onlookers.

Classic blue jeans can stand up against the brightest of orange so don’t shy away from the shade when choosing chunky neck pieces.

Zoe’s Verdict

This feels much more my thing. I love the jeans with the stripy blazer, and that big necklace really makes a difference to the whole outfit. I really like this one.

Shoes

The perfect gateway piece for colour popping. A pair of heels in the most daring of shades is the perfect way to dip your toe in the water.

Oranges from peachy tones to full on tango will go with most colour palettes, and when you are feeling brave enough pair it with some pink to make you really pop.
