Edinburgh New Year road closure guide

EDINBURGH’S Hogmanay programme begins tomorrow, the start of a three-day spectacle that will see the city centre come alive with entertainment.

Getting around town will therefore be an adventure to say the least, so here to help you plan any journeys you may have to undertake is a guide to road closures and parking restrictions over the duration of the event.

TOMORROW: The Torchlight Procession

Closed 6.30pm–8pm: High Street, Bank Street, North Bank Street, The Mound, Princes Street, Waterloo Place, Regent Road to Carriage Drive up Calton Hill.

Parliament Square will close at 12pm. High Street, St Giles’ Street and Lawnmarket will be closed 4pm-9pm.

The remainder of the procession route as well as The Mound, George IV Bridge, North Bridge, Leith Street and Waverley Bridge will close at 5.30pm. All streets will reopen at 9pm.

SATURDAY: Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party

Closed 9pm–1am: Princes Street, George Street, Rose Street, Castle Street, Frederick Street, Hanover Street, South St David Street, South St Andrew Street, Waverley Bridge, The Mound, Market Street, North Bridge, Bank Street, St Giles’ Street, Mound Place, Ramsay Lane and Ramsay Gardens.

Meuse Lane and South St David Street will close from 7pm on December 30 to 10am.

Bank Street, North Bank Street, The Mound, Market Street (between The Mound and Waverley Bridge) and Waverley Bridge will close at 1am.

Princes Street is already closed, but the remaining section between Waverley Bridge and North Bridge will close at 3.20am, except for access to Waverley station via South St Andrew Street, and in its entirety from 6pm. High Street, St Giles Street and George IV Bridge (northbound) will close at 4pm.

At 6pm all roads within the city centre not already fully closed, including Princes Street, Rose Street, Waverley Bridge, St Andrew Square (except for buses), Lawnmarket, Cockburn Street, Market Street, Lothian Road (from West Approach Road to Princes Street) and Shandwick Place (except buses eastbound) will close to vehicular traffic until Sunday morning.

George Street will be closed at 9pm with Leith Street (from Calton Rd to Waterloo Place), Waterloo Place and North and South Bridge closing to vehicles from 10pm until 10am on Sunday.

SUNDAY: The New Year Games

Closed 2pm–6pm: Grassmarket.

The Grassmarket and West Port (between Lady Lawson Street and Grassmarket) will be closed 1pm-7pm.

King’s Stables Rd will be closed 5pm-7pm.
