Dance review: Dante, Venue 150 @ EICC (Venue 150), Edinburgh

WHEN there are almost twice as many people on the stage as watching in the large conference centre auditorium, your sympathies naturally go out
to the cast.

Dante

Venue 150 @ EICC (Venue 150)

Star rating: *

But by the end of this mystifying version of Dante’s Inferno with added handstands, I felt they were lucky to outnumber the audience by so little.

There appears to have been no thought given to interpreting the story in any new way, or any feeling for why it might be relevant. Instead, there is constant tumbling and very mildly impressive aerial acrobatics to represent the various circles of Hades.

Some of the dialogue can’t be heard over the incessant electronic score; the rest of the performance is simply confusing shouted formal declarations. An unspectacular spectacle.

• Until today, 4pm.
