Dance, physical theatre & circus review: Ockham's Razor: Tipping Point

Perhaps because they set their own bar so very high with last year's double-bill, Arc and Every Action, the return of aerial theatre company Ockham's Razor is not quite the triumph we might have hoped.

Ockhams Razor return to the Fringe with their Mime Festival-headlining hit, a full length show with original equipment that transforms simple five-metre poles into a myriad of walkways, spindles, pillars and pendulums. Set in the round in a nod to traditional circus, audiences are drawn close to the action as the aerial artists balance, climb and cling to their teetering world. Poles are hung from the roof, balanced on fingertips, climbed, swung from and walked along.

Tipping Point still finds the performers taking risks and creating beauty, but that wonderful blend of circus and theatricality has been replaced with straight-
forward skill-sharing.

Five aerialists are surrounded by long white poles, specially fashioned for the event. They swing from the rig, prompting the three men and two women to find as many ways as possible to climb or balance on them.

It’s all about the ‘tipping point’ and their quest to find the exact place to stand or sit, when to shift their weight, and where to place their feet to maintain the pole’s position (and their own safety).

There’s a huge amount to enjoy here – if only Ockham hadn’t spoilt us last year by showing us what they’re really capable of.

Until today, 3pm.
