Dance, Physical Theatre & Circus: Attached

Edinburgh Festival Fringe: There's a real sense of expectation before and during Attached, partly generated by the performers, partly by their surroundings. An exciting array of apparatus lies on the stage as the audience enters the theatre, most of which you can't even hazard a guess at its purpose.

Slowly, we find out. A vast banana-shaped piece of metal is used as a see-saw to perilous effect; a crash mat becomes the target for a Velcro-clad performer playing cannonball; boxes are stacked impressively high for acrobatic endeavours, and so it goes on.

At times it feels a bit like Disneyland, where you queue for an hour for a two-minute ride – here an acrobatic trick can take ten times longer to set up than execute, with audience participation used for padding.

But performers Manu Tiger and Massimiliano Rossetti clearly have a good working rapport, and complement each other in every way – physically, comically, practically. When heavyset Rossetti jumps on a counter-weight, Tiger flies high. When Rossetti sets up a routine which clearly won’t end well for his partner, Tiger’s deadpan facial expressions say it all.

And the Velcro onesies are a stroke of genius.

Until 27 August.
