Estate agent Savills has been appointed to sell the Leckie Estate, near Gargunnock, Stirling, where the former Scottish Secretary Sir George Younger lived.

The 1,500 acre estate lies to the west of Stirling and is sheltered by the Campsie Fells to the south and overlooks the Forth Valley to Ben Vorlich and Ben Lomond to the north.

Although it dates back to the time of Robert the Bruce, in more recent years the estate became best known through its association with Sir George, who also served Mrs Thatcher’s Government as Defence Secretary.

Although a popular politician of his time and one of the few Tory “wets” tolerated by Mrs Thatcher, Sir George was blamed by some for the introduction of the poll tax. As Scottish Secretary he took up the system mooted by a Scottish councillor Douglas Mason and converted the then Prime Minister to the new tax.

Leckie has in the ownership of the Younger family – well known for running the famous brewery business - since 1906. The estate is being sold following the death of Sir George’s widow Diana, Viscountess Younger in November, 2015. Sir George passed away in 2003.

Evelyn Channing of Savills said “I can sense that it is with a heavy heart that all four family members have decided that Leckie should be sold. It is very much hoped that the new custodian of Leckie will treasure and enjoy the estate as much as the Youngers have done”.

Ms Channing added: “Leckie is a beautifully compact and accessible estate, which is likely to attract much interest from home and abroad when it is launched on the market.”

The estate is likely to come to the market in late spring 2016.
