Comedy review: Kinsey Sicks: Lady Cocks Of Bang Boys

The Kinsey Sicks are 'America's Favourite Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet'.''˜Dragapella'' has a wee trademark sign next to it in publicity.

Star rating: ****

Venue: Gilded Balloon Teviot (Venue 14)

So it seems these four female impersonators from the US have had their own imitators, and I’m not surprised. Because Winnie, Rachel, Trixie and Trampolina are fabulous femmes – gloriously glamorous, wackily witty and totally tuneful.

The group is named after the famous sexuality scale that scores six as “exclusively homosexual”, but the appeal of this lady bunch is broader than that. Forget those drag artists who merely lip synch to disco classics, these dames have enviable individual voices that they can combine into lovely four-part harmonies. And they don’t give us renditions of old favourites, they rewrite them to make them personal, political and most importantly, funny. At this show the list includes song for a new man Trannie Boy, magic carpet ride A Hole New World, audience arm-waver Preach Out And Judge, and plea for religious tolerance Sikh to Sheik (“Heaven, hymen heaven”). The lyrics are Ladyshave sharp and rarely less than ribald.

The star-spangled girls also include an original opening number in which they set out their store – no matter how much we hate the show, there are NO REFUNDS – and a closing ditty that’s icing on the cake.

Then there are the in-between gags, which are fast, furious and topical – it’s safe to say this lot weren’t invited to play the recent Republican Convention.

Audience participation extends to more than being sat on by the man-hungry Rachel – we’re invited to vote off our least favourite songs, ensuring they’ll be replaced in the next day’s show.

Are they kidding, trying to entice us back with the promise of new delights? I’m tempted to go back and find out.

Until 29 August. Today 9:30pm.
