Comedy review: Jack Evans: Melancholy Poontang

In an hour packed with comedy invention.

Star rating: ***
Venue: Cowgatehead (32)

Evans gives us Cluedo (and examines the reason why there is no loo in the Cluedo mansion) , couscous and, after an hilarious tangle of board game based word play and silliness (Hungry Hippos has never been this dramatic), an American Bald Eagle, Barry Shafto, Demon Hunter (catchphrase “van, hammer, no questions asked”), Maurice a professional pick-up artist who is “all about the pussy” and Detective Inspector Horse Hand, who has a horse head for a hand and gets mildly distracted when it seems that a girl in the front row might have carrots.

As well as each character live, they also appear, starring in their own wonderful little animations. The home life of Barry Shafto and his long- suffering wife is particularly engaging and reminiscent of an unexpectedly-violent episode of The Shuttleworths. The cartoon involving a jail break on a Monopoly board is gripping. We get some minor beastiality, a convoluted finale and absolutely the best Noam Chomsky material ever. Evans is clever, creative and funny.

Until 27 August. Today 4:45pm.
