Children’s shows: Hoof HoofBongo Club (Venue 143)

This rethinking of Euripides’s tragedy The Bacchae is led by two bickering brothers, who happened to be goats, and follows their reenactment of the classical story for their father.

RATING: * *

They may wear the shoes of Marc Bolan but sadly they share none of his charisma. Whether it’s the half-baked attempt to incorporate shadow puppetry, or the complicated and inaccessible songs, many elements of this show alienate its intended younger audience. A folksy interpretation of Greek mythology may seem plausible, but this production makes little attempt to create a sense of the magical, and so falls flat.

Until 12 August.
