Bonnie Prince Charlie's sword and shield go on show

The items are on show at the Gifts for a Prince exhibition at Perth Museum ahead of a major National Museum of Scotland show to open next summer.

The targe, an elaborately decorated small shield with a silver Medusa at its centrepiece, is said to have been recovered by Ewan MacPherson of Cluny, a Jacobite colonel, following the 1746 battle with the item remaining in his family until the 20th Century.

The sword, a high-status item as opposed to a weapon of war, is said to have been found by government soldiers following Charles Edward Stuart’s crushing defeat near Inverness and presented to the Duke of Cumberland as a spoil of war.

The items are thought to have been gifted to the Prince by James Drummond, 3rd Duke of Perth, a committed supporter of the Jacobite cause.

Now the items have returned to Perth as part of a display where they can be seen until February 25, 2017.

The exhibition also highlights the role of Perthshire in the Jacobite risings with a focus on the 3rd Duke of Perth and his role in the uprising.

Raised near Crieff, the Duke became lieutenant-general of the Highland army and participated in the Jacobite victory at the Battle of Prestonpans before marching into England and laying siege to Carlisle Castle in 1745.
