Bannockburn mansion with Bonnie Prince Charlie bed for sale

A DILAPIDATED mansion that still contains a bed that Bonnie Prince Charlie once slept in has been put on the market.

Grade A listed Bannockburn House, near Stirling, was at the centre of a wrangle over tenancy rights, is up for sale for £1.25 million.

Its owner, businessman Peter Drake last week won a court ruling for vacant possession of the property.

Chris Ashton, a spokesman for Mr Drake, said the building would be officially listed on the market in the next few weeks.

He said: “It’s up for sale now, and we’ve put the word out to possible interested parties. It will have to be turned into a hotel, or some kind of public access building where people get to see it.”

“The four-poster bed is being sold as part of the house. It will be removed purely for safety and put into storage, but it’s an asset which comes as part of the house sale.”

The house was probably commissioned by Sir Hugh Paterson in 1675. In 1746, after the Battle of Culloden, Sir Hugh’s grandson, by then the owner, entertained Charles Edward Stuart in Bannockburn House. The Prince met the then owner’s niece, Clementina Walkinshaw, who would later become his lover and mother of his child.
