British acts make up half of the top 10 artists on the list compiled by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

Adele, 27, is the third recipient of the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the year award, which reflects an artist’s worldwide popularity across physical formats, downloads and streaming services.

Her place at the top of the chart was driven by the single Hello, released in October, from her latest album, 25.

The track was number one in more than 30 countries worldwide, including the UK, United States, Germany, France, Italy and Australia.

The album followed in November and has since notched up worldwide sales of more than 15 million.

Other British acts in the top 10 included Ed Sheeran in second place, plus One Direction, Coldplay and Sam Smith.

American singer Taylor Swift – winner of the 2014 IFPI Global Recording Artist award – was in third place this time around.
