Fans of AEW Revolution 2021 were promised fireworks - and that’s exactly what they got from the promoter’s main event.

The stars of AEW, which stands for All Elite Wrestling, were out in force for the pay-per-view event which took place in Jacksonville, Florida, on 7 March.

AEW did its chances of rivalling World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) no harm with an action-packed nine-fight schedule, with a few healthy surprises thrown in.

Its founder Tony Khan, who also co-owns Fulham Football Club of the Premier League and NFL franchise Jacksonville Jaguars, paid homage to the “great fans for making it possible”.

And the promoters can be encouraged by recent ratings which have seen it not only rival WWE but surpass its audience figures in the week leading up to AEW Revolution.

AEW Revolution 2021 talking points

The pay-per-view event saw a bumper nine-fight card, including a tag team royale, women’s world championship bout and an exploding barbed wire headliner.

As well as lots of in-ring entertainment, there were a handful of incidents outside the fighting quarters which brought as much of a cheer, including a new AEW star from WWE.

Christian Cage became the latest wrestler to make the jump from WWE to AEW when he was unveiled as AEW’s mystery signee on the night.

Cage had a public workout at the 2021 Royal Rumble in January but will now feature in AEW events, introducing himself with the new catchphrase ‘outwork everyone’.

Sting made a return to action alongside Darby Allin against Team Taz, Matt Hardy lost a big money match to Hangman Adam Page and commentator Jim Ross almost lost his voice.

The night concluded with the world championship decider between champion Kenny Omega and challenger Jon Moxley, with the referee donned in a hazmat suit.

AEW Revolution 2021 main event

The ‘exploding barbed wire deathmatch’ between Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley promised fireworks - and it didn’t disappoint.

The match saw some of the rings ropes replaced with barbed wire which would explode if a wrestler made contact with them.

Whatsmore, the ring would explode if the match didn’t conclude inside 30 minutes - with the last man standing declared the winner.

Omega successfully defended the AEW World Championship belt after performing a devastating move - the one-winged angel - onto a steel chair.

Omega and his allies Don Callis and The Good Brothers then went to work on Moxley after the bell, handcuffing him to the ring ropes.

Eddie Kingston came to Moxley’s rescue, running down to protect him from the impact.

The next event, AEW Dynamite, will take place on 10 March 2021 in Jacksonville, Florida.
