Zemmama: Hibs can make serious challenge in SPL title race

MEROUANE ZEMMAMA today insisted Hibs can blast the SPL title race wide open by beating champions Rangers in Sunday's high noon showdown.

The little Moroccan watched Capital rivals Hearts put a dent in Celtic's bid for the top as they stormed back to clinch a 2-1 win at Tynecastle yesterday.

And now the midfield ace has no doubts John Hughes' side can do the same when the Ibrox club make the journey to Edinburgh this weekend.

Hibs stretched their unbeaten League run to 12 matches with an impressive 2-0 victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie as Anthony Stokes made it five goals in three games, a result which leaves them clear in third place, trailing Celtic by a single point and with Rangers five ahead.

But, while delighted to see Hibs riding high, 25-year-old Zemmama claimed finishing "best of the rest" come the end of May was the least of his ambitions.

Despite Rangers crushing Motherwell 6-1 on Saturday, Zemmama said: "We drew with them at their stadium earlier in the season and now we are at our stadium and we will see what we can do.

"All of our players are motivated and I think we will win this game. The gap between us and the Old Firm is closer than it has been. Normally Rangers and Celtic are maybe ten or 15 points ahead but now we are only five back."

Zemmama insisted morale was sky-high at Easter Road following Hibs impressive run.

He said: "When you are trying to win the title you have to win every game and that's what we will try to do.

"Rangers had a very good result against Motherwell and their confidence is sure to be pretty high, but our confidence is also very good at the moment.

"We need to keep going now to catch the Old Firm. We need to win our next game against Rangers and then keep on winning. We are looking to go as far as we can, so why not go for the title?"
