Youngster proves he can cut it for charity

A SIX-year-old from Glasgow has raised nearly £1,000 by shaving off his hair to kick-start a charity effort by the Glasgow Warriors.

Nairn Sandlan wanted to join in with the Warriors charity abseil off the roof of Murrayfield Stadium on 15 April, but was told he was too young to take part in the event, which is raising funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, one of the Warriors’ nominated charities.

But that did not deter the young Warriors fan, who was deeply saddened by the loss of a family friend’s child to CF. He decided instead to shave off his locks and duly earned £919 in sponsorship money as a result.

His mother Vonnie said: “Nairn was so affected after our friends lost a child to CF that it awakened a real charity spirit in him. He came up with the idea of shaving off his hair, which was shoulder length, to raise money to help the Cystic Fibrosis Trust to fund research to stop CF from cutting children’s lives short.

“We were so surprised when friends and family all donated and helped him to raise such a large amount. He wanted to do the Murrayfield Abseil supported by Glasgow Warriors, but he’s too small for this!”

June Ross, CF Trust Regional Fundraising Manager in Scotland, commented: “It never ceases to amaze me what a generosity of spirit people have, and coming from such a young lad like Nairn it is all the more heart-warming.”
