World Cup slot for former Scot McGlinchey

THERE will be at least one 'Scot' in action at next month's World Cup finals in South Africa, after Motherwell midfielder Michael McGlinchey was named in New Zealand's 23-man squad.

McGlinchey played for Scotland at the Under-20 World Cup three years ago. He was born in New Zealand in 1987 when his Scottish father Norman played football for Wellington side Lower Hutt, but was brought back to Scotland nine months later. Last year he switched national allegiance to the land of his birth.

Originally on the books at Celtic for two seasons, McGlinchey played eight games on loan at Dunfermline, before joining Central Coast Mariners in Australia. He moved to Motherwell on loan in February this year. Also included in the New Zealand squad is former Hibs and Celtic striker Chris Killen, now with Middlesbrough.
