Women's rugby: Claire Canal given 13-week ban for eye knock

France back row Claire Canal has become the first women's Six Nations player to be suspended for making contact with an opponent's eye area.

Canal, who was sent off in last week's game against England, has been banned for 13 weeks after she admitted placing her hand near Jo McGilchrist's eye.

England won the game in Rennes 11-10 and captured the Grand Slam.

A disciplinary panel considered her action to be reckless and, because of a break at the end of the season, Canal cannot return to playing until 2 August.
