Wishart talks up Davis for PFA award

Wishart yesterday launched the voting process for the awards, sponsored by Cheque Centre, along with last year's winner, Celtic midfielder Scott Brown.

Former Rangers player Wishart believes the recipient of the main award should this year come from Ibrox. "My player of the year would be Steven Davis," Wishart said.

"When Rangers have played some sparkling football and scored a lot of goals, he has been the key man. He just goes about his job without any fuss. He has deceptive pace, he is very quick.

"He will play wide on the right, through the centre, where I think he prefers to play. His touch on the ball has been terrific.

"If you look back over Rangers' best performances, Steven Davis has been the outstanding player.

"Guys like Kris Boyd will score you goals, Kenny Miller will make great runs and create them, but you need someone to pass it to them."

Wishart hopes to see clubs outside the Old Firm represented when the top four candidates are named later this month.

Wishart listed Dundee United defender Andy Webster and Hibernian striker Anthony Stokes as potential contenders.

And he added: "We've had great performances recently from Motherwell. Although John Ruddy didn't cover himself in glory at the weekend, he's had a terrific season."
