Wimbledon in 3D screenings

THE climax of Wimbledon Championships will be shown live in 3D in selected cinemas around the world for the first time this year.

The men's singles semi-finals and men's and women's singles finals will be broadcast in the new format after Sony and the All England Club announced a multi-year partnership yesterday.

Ian Ritchie, chief executive of the AELTC, said: "Wimbledon is renowned for its heritage and sense of tradition.

"At the same time, we are always looking for ways to improve the presentation of the championships by successfully blending that tradition with innovation."

Meanwhile, the Electronics giant Sony has completed the purchase of Hawk-Eye, the British-based company that provides the ball-tracking technology for major tennis championships and cricket events around the world.

Financial details weren't disclosed but the value of Hawk-Eye is estimated at around 20 million.
