Wilkinson's Super Six bid

LIVINGSTON cyclist Callum Wilkinson lines up for Sunday's David Bell Memorial Road Race looking to tighten his grip on top spot in the Scottish Power Renewables Super Six Series, writes COLIN RENTON.

The 21 year old features in a strong Endura Racing squad which also includes newly-crowned Scottish champion Evan Oliphant.

Among the other contenders racing in Ayrshire is South Queensferry's Ross Creber, last year's winner of the 70-mile event, which is also the penultimate round of the Super Six competition. Wilkinson has forged a lead in that series with the help of a win at the Duncan McGregor event in Fife and second spot at the David Campbell Memorial last month.

One man missing from the race is Wilkinson's teammate James McCallum, who will be in action at the Smithfield Nocturne in London tomorrow night. The race is the first in a three-round series which comes to Edinburgh on 3 July.

Meanwhile, Capital rider Pippa Handley was going into today's 114-kilometre second stage of the Ster Zeeuwsche Eilanden in Holland as top Scot after a strong ride in last night's prologue. Handley finished 18th, 41 seconds down on Kirsten Wild of Holland and 27 seconds ahead of in-form Kate Cullen.
