Whitburn gearing up for must-win games

WHITBURN desperately need points when they play host to Scottish Cup winners Linlithgow in the Super League tonight.

Whitburn are currently second bottom and, with two sides going down to the Premier League, they desperately need to win both tonight's game as well as Saturday's against third-bottom Hill of Beath Hawthorn. Should they lose against the Rose then, with only two games remaining, the outlook is bleak.

On top of all that, manager Derek Strickland has announced he will be leaving his post at the end of the season.

It has been a tough year for Whitburn, with the bad weather leaving the club with a huge backlog of games and a very stretched budget.

With no money coming in, the club had to talk to the players to renegotiate their contracts and several quit – leaving a squad barely able to cover the remaining games.

Linlithgow won't ease up despite losing the Super League title race to Bo'ness as they will see the game as a warm-up for their East of Scotland Cup final against Musselburgh.

Several players are competing for their futures at Prestonfield so manager Dave Baikie may switch things around.
