West of Scotland 12-63 Currie: Leaders Currie steamroller weary West

IT WAS a game too far for West who, having successfully consolidated their Premiership One status, were ruthlessly turned over by a free flowing Currie team on course for the league title.

Earlier last week West had given the other title chasers Ayr the fright of their lives, only losing by a try deep in injury time, but against Currie they had nothing left in the locker.

The tries came thick and fast right from the kick off, and the bonus point was gift-wrapped before half time.

West coach John Beattie, in charge for the last time before moving on after five years, said: "I knew we would struggle. Psychologically, we felt we should have beaten Ayr and then we crashed out there. It was a shame for the crowd because it meant one-way traffic but the heads were difficult today."

West also said goodbye to ex-Scotland and Lions hooker Gordon Bulloch, who signed off with two consolation tries, and ex-Glasgow pro Guy Perrett, leaving the field and the future to younger, home-grown talent.

Bulloch said: "The team has come up through the leagues with much the same boys who have risen to this current level. It will be up to them next season. Our only aim was to stay up and that has been achieved. I need to step away for a while then maybe look at a coaching role."

The season ended for West under an avalanche of nine tries as Currie outclassed them to stay locked together with rivals Ayr at the top of the table way above the rest. Currie still have another four games to play and entertain Boroughmuir tomorrow night with Andy Binikos and Mark Cairns strengthening their squad. Coach Ally Donaldson said: "We thought if we could start the game at a high tempo they would find it difficult to keep the pace up and that was what happened."
