Wentworth chief Richard Caring dreams of dramatic winning eagle

THE dream scenario for Wentworth owner Richard Caring at the BMW PGA Championship tomorrow is for someone to eagle the controversial final hole and win by one.

"I'm going to make sure it happens," he joked after accepting blame for what has become the most talked about stretch of land in European Tour golf for years.

At the halfway stage of the circuit's flagship event Scot Marc Warren's 15-foot putt in the opening group on the opening day remains the only eagle.

Luke Donald leads at six under par after two rounds of 68 containing just one bogey. The Ryder Cup star, over from the US Tour for a three-week stint that also takes in the Madrid Masters and then the Wales Open on the Celtic Manor course where he hopes to return to the European Ryder Cup team in October, resumed one ahead of fellow Englishmen Ross Fisher and Danny Willett and also South African James Kingston.

Defending champion Paul Casey and Padraig Harrington were only two behind overnight and Ernie Els three back, while Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood were one over and two over.

Els was the man brought in to toughen up the West Course but Caring got involved too.

On the 18th Caring won the battle over the height of the raised green after it was decided to introduce a meandering ditch in front and to the left.

And the 61-year-old multi-millionaire admitted: "Ernie was right, I was wrong

"I wanted to give the spectators a bit of excitement, a bit of theatre at the end of the day, but we might have gone slightly too far because it's proven to be quite difficult."
