Wembley's other showpiece finals

TONIGHT is the sixth time that Wembley has hosted the showpiece match.

1963: AC Milan 2 Benfica 1

A double from Brazilian striker Jose Altafini gave the Italians the first of their seven European Cup/Champions League wins after the great Eusebio put the Portuguese team in front. After retiring from playing Altafini became a renowned football commentator, coining the phrase Golaccio (meaning 'Goaltastic') - which was used at the beginning and end credits of the popular Channel 4 show Football Italia in the 1990s.

1968: Man United 4 Benfica 1 (aet)

Manchester United became the first English team to lift the European Cup after three extra-time goals in the space of six minutes from George Best, Brian Kidd and Bobby Charlton earned the Red Devils victory. The match was the culmination of ten years of rebuilding for United following the Munich air disaster, with a survivor of that tragedy, Charlton, also having given them the lead in normal time before Benfica's Jaime Graca equalised late on.

1971: Ajax 2 Panathinaikos 0

Johan Cruyff-inspired Ajax defeated the Greek champions as goals at either end of the game from Dick van Dijk and substitute Arie Haan took the trophy back to Amsterdam for the first time in the club's history. It was to be the first of three European Cup triumphs in a row for the Dutch side.

1978: Liverpool 1 Club Brugge 0

Kenny Dalglish's chip over Brugge's Danish goalkeeper Birgir Jensen in the 65th minute ensured the Reds retained the European Cup. The strike was one of 31 the current Liverpool manager scored in his debut season at Anfield, following his record British transfer from Celtic for 440,000 the summer before.

1992: Barcelona 1 Sampdoria 0 (aet)

Ronald Koeman's thunderous free-kick saw Bara win the most prestigious trophy in European club football for the first time in their history.
