Watts wallops Knights for 122

FRASER Watts fired another reminder to Scotland chiefs yesterday as he steered Carlton to a resounding win over form-horses Dunfermline.

Watts – who has been snubbed by the national selectors for the current Pro40 campaign against the English counties – hit a brilliant 122 at Grange Loan to put the contest out of reach of the Knights.

His effort enabled the capital outfit to surge to 278 for seven before skittling the Fifers for only 118.

Watts was given stout support by Jamie Kerr, who finished on 46 not out, and Preston Mommsen (33).

Marshall Bunting was the only Dunfermline bowler to shine, grabbing three for 45.

The stage was left clear for Omar Ahmad to challenge Watts for the man of the match prize.

He claimed remarkable figures of six for 12 to send the Knights sprawling. Skipper Gowtham Rai hit 34 to at least take them into three figures.

The return of Ryan Watson proved inspirational for Forfarshire in their equally convincing nine-wicket success against shaky champions Aberdeenshire.

Young bowlers Aman Bailwal and Henry Philip inflicted the initial damage as they shared six cheap wickets to dismiss the Mannofield men for 137.

Watson smashed a quick unbeaten 74 and Graeme Garden 45 not out to complete the nine-wicket rout.

Ewan Chalmers produced a powerful all-round display to help Watsonians prolong Greenock's wretched run at Glenpark. Chalmers smashed 77 as Sonians sprinted to 215 for five in only 25 overs. He then snatched three scalps to send the home strugglers sliding to 137 all out.

Premier pacesetters Grange had to rely on a salvage act by veteran all-rounder Stuey Davidson to haul them out of peril against West of Scotland at Raeburn Place.

The hosts were struggling badly on 132 for eight, before Davidson – with the help of Micky Thomas – guided them to 210.

Davidson struck 44, while Thomas weighed in with an equally crucial 28.

West then looked on course for a shock win as makeshift opener Moneeb Iqbal (64) and teenager Anjan Luthra (45) staved off the Grange attack.

But when Luthra fell to a superb catch in the deep by Olly Hairs, the tide turned back in favour of the home side and they won by only nine runs in a nailbiter.

A spate of boundaries from former Scotland hero Paul Hoffmann was the platform for Uddingston's victory over Clydesdale at Titwood. Hoffmann's 78 propelled the Lanarkshire side to 257 for six in a rain-affected contest.

Dale were set a revised target of 262 and they were unable to get there.

In the First Division, the potential of young bowler Michael Leask was underlined again as he helped Stoneywood-Dyce easily overcome Penicuik.

The teenager snapped up five for 19 as the Kirkhill crew were bundled out for just 97.

Stoneywood then strolled to the target with the loss of three men with more than half their allocation of overs to spare.

Second Division leaders Dumfries saw their home tussle with Kelburne washed out.

Hassan Akram struck 107 for Weirs in their 75-run win against SMRH.

Old stagers Scott Gourlay and David Cowan shared eight wickets as Freuchie edged out Imans Edinburgh.
