Washed-out title clash poised for final day

Shinty’s big title battle between Kyles and Newtonmore may now be staged as a last-day championship decider after rain flooded out Saturday’s show.

More than 1000 fans were expected at the Playing Fields in Tighnabruaich for a match which could have seen Kyles edge to within a whisker of the title.

However, the field failed an 8.30am pitch inspection and Camanachd Association officials are now likely to re-arrange the match for the end of the season.

“The park failed a morning inspection and it is now likely to be at the end of the campaign. It is not the way we would have wanted it and the issue may run into November but there is not much you can do about the weather, unfortunately,” said a spokesman.

Both sides have three games left, with Kyles two points and 11 goals in front.

Elsewhere, Inveraray did themselves a favour in the relegation fight with a 5-0 win over already-doomed Glenorchy, Garry Macpherson grabbing a hat- trick.

With Lovat losing 4-3 to Kingussie, it was a significant result and Inveraray may yet avoid the drop after a trying campaign.
