Volleyball: Scots end 12-year wait to beat England

Scotland men's volleyball team gave themselves a huge confidence boost before next month's Novotel Cup in Luxembourg by beating England for the first time in 12 years at the Glasgowlife Zoti Christmas International at the Kelvin Hall.

Saturday's 25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 25-15 win avenged the defeat by England the previous day and proved a fitting celebration for Kilmarnock's Stuart Edgar who made his 100th appearance for his country.

City of Edinburgh trio Barry McGuigan, Robin Miedzyrodzki and Mike Penny all played their part in the victory.

Coach Simon Loftus looked baffled at the number of unforced errors his team made in the first match and there was a much more solid look about Scotland on the second day.

Scotland face three matches in three days in Luxembourg and Loftus will try to ensure that it is the right Scotland that show up for every match.

The weekend's internationals also provided a pointer to the more long-term future with Scotland's Under-20 team producing two commanding victories over Northern Ireland's Under-20 side.

Guided by former City of Edinburgh coach Ian Brownlee, Scotland won 25-20, 25-11, 25-21 and 25-10, 25-23, 25-14.
