Volleyball: Jets running out of time to achieve lift-off

EDINBURGH JETS have just three matches left to save their season after suffering defeat in Ayrshire in the men's Schelde Sports Scottish Volleyball League.

The Capital side lost to bottom-of-the-table Troon PA, 22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, who have now moved level on points with them at the foot of division one.

Crucially, Jets have won one more set which keeps them slightly ahead on sets percentage and the relegation issue rests on the final three matches. "We can still avoid the automatic relegation spot if we can pick up a few sets in our final matches," said Troon coach Vince Krawczyk.

Elsewhere, after a promising start, Fife went down 18-25, 20-25, 15-25 to league leaders City of Edinburgh at the weekend.

The scores were locked at 15-15 in the first set but Edinburgh had the weapons to pull away at the end of each set even without the injured Simon Hammond.

Gavin Watt and Radek Szlendak both came up with big blocks when it mattered most to keep Fife at bay.

In the women's first division, City of Edinburgh kept the heat on Troon PA at the top with a convincing 25-11, 25-17, 25-16 win over Glasgow Mets after a particularly impressive first set.
