Volleyball: City's record shattered by rivals in cup

CITY of Glasgow Ragazzi ended City of Edinburgh's treble hopes in the men's Scottish Volleyball Cup semi-finals at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall.

Edinburgh had not lost a match all season but fell in straight sets 25-20, 25-18, 25-22 as Ragazzi dedicated the victory to the new-born daughter of Scottish international Ali Galloway.

Galloway missed the semi-final as his wife gave birth to on the morning of the match and coach Tommy Dowens said: "The players want to dedicate the victory to Ali's baby daughter Millie.

"It was just the perfect game by us and it's the best we've played all season."

Edinburgh had been given a warning 24 hours before when they trailed Bon Accord in Aberdeen in their final match of the regular season.

But they showed great character to come back and win 25-19, 22-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-12 and complete their regular-season league programme undefeated.

Ragazzi will face Glasgow Mets in the final after Mets came from two sets down to defeat Kilmarnock 21-25, 25-27, 25-19, 25-22, 15-9.

In the women's semi-finals, Edinburgh Jets lost 19-25, 12-25, 25-13, 20-25 to holders Troon PA. Su Ragazzi beat non-league North Grampian in straight sets 25-15, 25-12, 25-23 in the other semi-final.
