Volleyball: City women state intent in beating Troon

CITY OF EDINBURGH took the chance to remind Troon PA that the women's Scottish Volleyball League title is still up for grabs.

The Capital side, who beat Troon in the Top Teams Cup final in December, handed the Ayrshire side their first league defeat of the campaign with a 21-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-14 win away from home.

It moves them to within two points of the leaders as the season reaches a crucial stage with teams jostling for play-off places.

In the men's first division, City of Edinburgh kept their unbeaten record but their 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19 win over City of Glasgow Ragazzi was not without drama.

Pole Radek Szlendak suffered an injury midway through the second set and had to go off leaving a concern for player-coach Barry McGuigan in the final run-in to the season.

Scottish international Ali Galloway was red-carded for Ragazzi in the third set but his team rallied to take the set.

But City showed how much they have matured this season by taking the final set, Gavin Watt finishing the match with a service ace.
