Volleyball: City capture John Syer Trophy in show of strength

City OF EDINBURGH captured the men’s John Syer Trophy for the third successive year to underline they are the team to beat in Scottish volleyball.

The Capital side edged Kilmarnock Blaze 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 18-25, 15-6 at Wishaw Sports Centre to complete the first half of the season with an unblemished record.

Edinburgh took control by winning the first two sets but Blaze, inspired by Scotland international Stuart Edgar, hit back and won the next two sets. But the favourites held the upper hand in the tie-break set as Blaze struggled to control their strong serving.

The win came 24 hours after Edinburgh had beaten South Ayrshire 25-15, 25-16, 25-11 in the Schelde Sports Scottish League to strengthen their grip at the top of the table.

Edinburgh Jets made it a Capital double, winning the women’s John Syer Trophy for the first time with a shock 3-2 win over previously unbeaten Troon PA.

Having taken care of City of Edinburgh to reach the final, Jets have now shown they can mount a strong challenge for the remaining honours.
