Volleyball: Blaze burn Ed City in trophy final

City of Edinburgh lost their unbeaten volleyball record when they let a two-set lead slip against Kilmarnock Blaze in the final of the men’s John Syer Trophy at Ravenscraig Sports Facility last night.

With Jamie McHardy back from injury and Niall Collin stamping his authority on the game, Edinburgh took the first two sets 25-17, 25-15.

Blaze hit back with Scottish internationalists Stuart Edgar and Callum Green doing most of the damage to win 17-25,
15-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-11.

It ruined Edinburgh’s weekend after they had taken care of Glasgow Mets in the league on Saturday – without McHardy – 25-19, 25-18, 25-18 to stay at the top of the table.

But the Capital side do have the chance of instant revenge on Kilmarnock when the teams meet again in the league on
Saturday.

In the final of the women’s John Syer Trophy, City of Edinburgh won a remarkable match with Troon Team Ayrshire
24-26, 32-20, 29-27, 25-15.

It gives Edinburgh hope that they can still hold on to their league title in spite of two losses so far in the competition, while Troon are unbeaten at the top.
