Visitors overhaul hosts' mighty 340 total to pull off remarkable victory

BRYAN Clarke hailed Uddingston's team spirit after they chased down a mammoth target of 341 to defeat shell-shocked leaders Grange off the last ball on Saturday.

The successful chase at Portgower Place is thought to be the highest in SNCL history and it will doubtless give Uddingston a massive boost for the rest of the summer after an up-and-down start to 2010.

Clarke said: "We just decided to back ourselves in the run chase and see what happened and all the guys batted really well in partnerships. Everyone batted selflessly and as the target got closer we believed we could do it.

"The result is a big one for us as a club, but it also shows that anyone can beat anyone on their day in the Premier Division and that there is some good cricket being played in the top flight."

Paul Hoffman and Sameer Zia got Uddingston's reply off to a flyer with 88 and 47 respectively, but it was a quick-fire 50 from Kalpendra Makwana that really swung the match in favour of the visitors.

His superb half century took the pressure off Amir Gul who then – once Makwana was out – managed to see his side home with 84 not out. Gul and David Bill needed six runs off the last over bowled by Giles Holmes and they managed to get a single off each one to win the match by five wickets in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Earlier in the day teenager Oli Hairs had led the way with 112 – his second league century of the season – as Grange had made 340-5. However, it proved not to be enough and they have now lost two league matches on the spin.

Watsonians lead the chasing pack after they secured an unlikely victory of their own at Grange Loan.

Carlton, with a number of first-choice players missing, looked to be cruising to victory in pursuit of Watsonians' 198-8. That was until Craig Wright, bowling spin these days, entered the fray and took 5-14.

The former Scotland captain took the scalps of Stevie Gilmour – who top-scored with 50 – Tom Barrett, Fraser Boyd and Omar Ahmad before getting last man Tom Clarke caught and bowled in the last over to see his side home by two runs.

In the Watsonians innings, Wright had hit 61 not out and Ewan Chalmers 45 to get their side close to 200.

Forfarshire are third after they thumped bottom side Greenock at Forthill. Batting first, the hosts made 248-8 with captain Ryan Watson making 84 and being ably supported by 33 from Australian Kelby Pickering and Aman Bailwal (26).

Earlier, Greenock all-rounder Chris Bellwood removed both openers Graeme Garden and Craig Wallace.

Greenock's reply started badly when they lost their top three batsmen very cheaply and things just got worse from there. Hong Kong international Courtney Kruger top scored with just 14 as Pickering (6-22) and Graeme Quinn (4-24) ripped through the batting line-up. The visitors were all out for 47, the lowest team total in the top flight since Greenock bowled Ayr out for 46 in 2008.

Clydesdale's good run continued with a 115-run win over Dunfermline at McKane Park.

Pro Kamran Sajid carried on his good form from last week's win over Grange with 81 and Omer Hussain made 76 as the visitors posted a solid looking 263-3.

In reply, Dunfermline lost Wayne Sullivan and Gowtham Rai early and despite a knock of 72 from Alistair Gray they were dismissed for 148.

Aberdeenshire saw off McCrea FS West at Mannofield, 69 from Kiwi Michael Parlane guiding them home as they chased down the visitors' total of 196 with five wickets in hand.
