Vijay sets pace in AT&T event

FORMER Masters champion Vijay Singh birdied his last hole for a three-under 68, giving him a one-shot lead over Navy veteran Billy Hurley III in the first round of the AT&T National.

They were the only players to break 70 among the early starters on a warm day that was headed toward being extremely hot.

Hurley, who resigned his commission in the Navy three years ago, can handle the heat. He recalls it being 110 degrees (44°C) in the shade while in the Persian Gulf.

Tiger Woods, who won at Congressional the last time the AT&T National was in town three years ago, was among the late starters.
