Tragic James Main remembered

A plaque has been unveiled in Easter Road's Famous Five Stand commemorating the tragic death 100 years ago of Hibs defender James Main after he was seriously injured in an accidental clash with a Partick Thistle player at Firhill

The 23-year-old Scotland international defender suffered a ruptured bowel in a fierce tackle with Thistle's Frank Branscombe on Christmas Day, 1909, although the injury was initially diagnosed only as severe bruising and Main felt well enough to travel to his home in West Calder.

However, Main, who had been captain for the day on Hibs' first appearance at the new Glasgow ground, took a turn for the worse the following day and died late on December 27.

The plaque, commissioned by the Hibernian Historical Trust, was unveiled by Main's great-nephew David Gibb in the Stand's concourse.
