Tour finale cancelled due to lack of entries

The final event on the Xltec Pro Golf Tour at The Roxburghe this week has been cancelled due to a lack of entries.

Organisers of the new pay-and-play circuit, which was devised by former Tartan Tour No 1 Alan Tait to bolster playing opportunities for male and female pros as well as leading amateurs, are now pondering a revamp of the schedule in 2011.

"We are looking to stage six or seven events in 2011 with the final one being held in July," said 110 Sport's golf project manager, Chris Turner. "We feel that after July there are plenty of opportunities for professionals to play and we have taken the view that, judging by the entries this year, there is no real value in us trying to host tournaments after that."

Dunbar pro Terry Mathieson returned to Murcar Links, his old stamping ground as an amateur, to post a two-under-par 69 to lead at the end of the first day of the Scottish Golfers' Alliance championship. At Newburgh-on-Ythan, two amateurs, Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) and Kevin Duncan (McDonald Ellon) shared the lead on two-under 70.

The equipment and clothing giant has been a major sponsor of the SGU for the past nine years and has agreed to extend its support at all levels of the game.
