Edinburgh head coach Alan Solomons revealed yesterday the 24-year-old had suffered a torn hamstring in a game of touch rugby during pre-season training.

The news is the latest blow for Denton who was forced to miss Scotland’s summer tour matches against Argentina and South Africa as a result of a head knock he received in the final Pro12 match of last term for his club against Leinster.

Edinburgh are in a pre-season camp in the Borders at Gala’s Netherdale ground.

Solomons said: “Dents will be out for a while.

“He definitely will not start the season and I think we will be looking at November or December for him to be back playing. He did nothing for seven weeks over the summer because of the concussions he had and we were very cautious bringing him up to speed with training. “It is just one of those things you know, the guys were playing a conditioning game and unfortunately he was injured.”

If Solomons’ injury prognosis is correct then Denton will be aiming to get back in action for the club’s Guinness Pro12 match away to Leinster on 31 October.

Scotland’s Autumn Tests begin on 8 November when they take on Argentina.

Meanwhile, Denton’s Edinburgh team-mate Grayson Hart, who won his first Scotland caps in the summer, could be out for up to four weeks.

The scrum-half, 26, has dislocated his elbow and was seeing a specialist yesterday about the problem.

Edinburghs first pre-season match is against Leicester Tigers on 23 August with the league campaign starting away to Munster on 5 September.
