Tony Brown

CULT HERO

IN the weekend that West Bromwich Albion clinched their return to the top-flight, we salute Tony Brown. In a record 720-game career with the Baggies which lasted from 1961 to 1980, ‘Bomber’ also became the club’s record goalscorer with 279 goals – 51 from the penalty spot. An FA Cup and League Cup winner who played as an attacking midfielder or up front, his solitary England cap was meagre recognition of his talents. Such is the affection in which he is held at the club that his former manager Ron Atkinson once suggested a statue of Brown be erected in the centre circle.
