Third Division: Ref's U-turn helps Montrose bounce off bottom spot

Montrose bounced off bottom spot in spectacular style on Saturday as they thrashed Clyde 8-1 at Links Park .

The Bully Wee, who now sit bottom of the Scottish Football League, had Graham Girvan sent off after 26 minutes for a foul with the scoreline goalless, but the game was transformed four minutes later in controversial circumstances..

Home striker Paul Tosh and Montrose's Ross McMillan clashed in the visitor's box and match official Des Roache booked the striker for simulation before running over to the touchline to speak to his assistant.

Whatever was said was enough for Roache to do a U-turn by sending off McMillan and awarding Montrose a penalty that Tosh netted.

Ross McCord made it two before half time with Connor Thompson opening the floodgates 11 minutes into the second half with his first senior goal.

Tosh grabbed two more, with Martin Boyle emulating Thompson's feat before McCord netted a seventh. Alan Lithgow grabbed a bit of pride back for his side only for substitute Paul Watson to seal an emphatic win with the best goal of the eight.

Third Division leaders Berwick could have done with one of Montrose's goals as they were involved in a goalless encounter at East Stirling where both sides were reduced to ten men.

David Dunn was dismissed for Shire in first-half injury time, then visiting goalkeeper Mark Peat was red-carded with 20 minutes to go.

Stranraer moved level on points with Berwick after their 4-1 over Arbroath at Stair Park which saw a Scott Agnew double putting them in front before Gayfield's Jay Shields was dismissed for deliberate handball.

Despite their numerical handicap Arbroath hit back through Steven Doris before goals from Sean Winter and Armand One guided Stranraer home.

Third placed Annan defeated Queen's Park 2-1 with David Cox hitting a late winner after Ian Harty and Craig Smith had exchanged goals.
