Third Division: Goal machine Gunn fires four as Elgin rout Berwick

The opening day of the Irn-Bru Third Division will be memorable for Elgin City striker Craig Gunn, who scored four times as the Borough Briggs men beat visitors Berwick Rangers 4-1.

Gunn fired in the opener after 17 minutes with an effort that deflected off visiting defender Chris McLeod. The striker quickly made it two by netting from the penalty spot after Daniel Moore had been fouled by Darren Smith and Gunn completed his hat-trick six minutes into the second half when he flicked home a corner. A header saw Gunn and Elgin score a fourth, with Berwick gaining a crumb of comfort when Paul Currie netted with a fierce drive.

Despite Gunn's heroics, Annan are top of the table after coming from two behind in 27 minutes to defeat Queen's Park 5-2. Craig Smith hit a double to put the Spiders in front but David Cox and Graeme Bell had Harry Cairney's men level by half time. Annan then took the win with two second-half headers from defender Scott Gibson either side of a goal from Steven Sloan. Clyde defeated Peterhead 2-0 at Broadwood when John Sweeney's fine goal on half time was added to by a Steph McDonald header 15 minutes from the end.

Alloa showed plenty of spirit under new manager Paul Hartley as they came back from 2-1 down with ten men to win 3-2 at Stranraer. Ryan McCord netted a second-minute penalty to put the Wasps ahead, but Chris Aitken and Sean Winter had the hosts winning by half-time.

Ben Gordon headed in an equaliser just before the hour mark and the Wasps shook off Ryan Caddis' red card for a crude challenge to take all three points when former Blue Kevin Cawley netted with six minutes to go.

John Coughlin's career at East Stirling got off to a winning start as a Steven Jackson penalty earned them a 1-0 win over visitors Montrose.
