Third Division: Brothers in arms help Livingston go 11 points clear at top

LIVINGSTON moved 11 points clear at the top of the table with a 2-1 win over Stranraer at Almondvale.

Liam Fox and Robbie Winters struck in the first half to set up the home side's eighth win in a ten-game unbeaten run, but the match was perhaps most noteworthy as being the occasion that a third of the four Jacobs' brothers at the club made a first-team appearance. Devon joined triplet sibling Kyle and elder brother Keaghan as a top-team player, leaving only Sheldon to make the breakthrough.

Substitute Michael Moore grabbed a late lifeline for the visitors, but Livingston were deserved winners. Their assistant manager Scott Paterson said: "We created plenty of chances and should have been more comfortable, but we won and that's the main thing at this stage of the season."

Stranraer manager Keith Knox said: "I was disappointed with the goals we lost but Livingston were the better side."

East Stirlingshire, a distant second to Livingston in the table, lost 3-2 at Ochilview to bottom club Montrose, who are now on a run of three wins in four games and could yet finish the season by hauling themselves off the foot off the table. Steven Tweed's side went ahead when John Gemmell fired home a free-kick in 16 minutes and midway through the first half the visitors made it 2-0 when Aaron Sinclair found the net.

Jamie Stevenson pulled a goal back 10 minutes into the second period only for youngster Daryl Nicol to hit what turned out to be the clincher before Stevenson netted a penalty.

Tweed said: "It was a deserved win and we now have a real chance of catching teams above us and that is helping motivate everyone at the club."

East Stirlingshire manager John O'Neil was not too downhearted and said: "That was actually as well as we have played recently and we had Montrose pinned back towards the end. It is vital we remain confident for the games coming up."

Forfar ended a run of defeats by drawing 1-1 with Albion Rovers, Ross Campbell's goal with 20 minutes left cancelling out Chris Boyle's strike for Rovers with half an hour gone.

Manager Dick Campbell said: "Hopefully that is our bad run over and we can get back to winning games again."

Rovers boss Paul Martin said: "That's our tenth draw in the league this season and not picking up full points is hurting our promotion aims."

Berwick also got their promotion push going again by beating Elgin 2-1 with Damon Gray and Stuart Callaghan netting in the first half. An own goal from David Greenhill shortly into the second period made life difficult for the Borderers, however.

Berwick manager Jimmy Crease said: "It was important to take three points, but we make things difficult for ourselves."

Queen's Park remain very firmly on the promotion trial after goals right at the end of each half from Michael Daly and then Jack Henry secured a 2-0 win at Annan. Head coach Gardner Speirs said: "We passed the ball about really well and I'm delighted with how the team is progressing."

Annan manager Harry Cairney said: "Our quality was just not good enough."
