The Class of 2011 are aiming to join bonnyrigg's cup-winning legends

BONNYRIGG ROSE manager Alan Miller is urging his players to grab their chance to become legends - as members of a Scottish Cup-winning team.

Players from the two Bonnyrigg sides to lift the Junior's game's top prize - in 1966 and 1978 - are being reunited at a special function being organised by the club later this year.

And the 'Class of 2011' could make that event even more memorable if they can go all the way in this season's Emirates-sponsored competition.

Tomorrow, Bonnyrigg are away to Bo'ness United in the quarter-finals and Miller is hoping his players can stay on track for glory.

"Along with the other teams left in the competition, we will be starting to dream about what might be if we can come through this tie," he admitted.

This is the first time Rose have made it to the quarter-finals for almost 20 years and Miller, for one, reckons that is not acceptable.

"This is a big club with a huge tradition," he added. "I think it was 1982 when we were last at this stage in the Scottish Cup and that isn't good enough.

"Pat Glynn had a terrific record here, winning eight trophies in 12 years, while we were also pleased to win the Super League two seasons ago.

"But we need to see ourselves alongside, not behind, the likes of Bo'ness and Linlithgow on a regular basis and I'll not be happy until that is the case."

Bonnyrigg have accounted for Johnstone Burgh, Pumpherston, Vale of Leven and Ardrossan Winter Rovers to reach the last eight. Tomorrow's tie is by far their toughest test so far but Miller reckons his side can take encouragement from a recent 1-1 draw against the reigning Super League champions at Newtown Park.

"I think that game showed that our guys have nothing to worry about, though we will have to start a bit better than we did then," he said.

"You can't afford to go behind to good teams like Bo'ness and come back all the time, though the last game was certainly encouraging as it showed my players don't give up on situations. I am confident we can go there and give another good account of ourselves and I think the key to this game will be how players cope with the occasion as much as the opposition.

"I reckon there will be a crowd of between 1200-1500 there and some players will not be used to that environment.

"It's going to be about doing the right things at the right time and knowing when to quicken up and also slow it down.

"Hopefully our players won't get caught up with the occasion but, as myself and the other members of the Bonnyrigg management team have been telling the players over the last three weeks, the one thing we've built up this season is an element of trust.

"There have maybe been occasions when we've not played as well as we'd have liked, but they always go out and do their best."

For Bo'ness, the home game will be a welcome bonus after being drawn away in all of the previous rounds, though they eventually beat Kinnoull in a replay at Newtown Park.

Since then, Willie Newbigging's side have won at Yoker, Bellshill and, in the last round, Petershill. "Our supporters have come out in droves to back us in this season's competition so a home tie on Saturday is maybe a payback for them," said the Bo'ness boss.

"The two games between us and Bonnyrigg this season have both ended in draws (it was 2-2 at New Dundas Park earlier in the campaign) and I would expect this one to be close as well."

Both teams have players who could surely lay claim to being the fastest player in the Junior game - Nicky Walker, Graeme McLaren and Grant Plenderleith all being flying machines for Bo'ness and the two Seans, Grady and Paliczka, also having pace to burn in the Bonnyrigg ranks.

"They will definitely be a threat, that's for sure, and we will need to play well on the day," added Newbigging.

Adding his thoughts, Miller said: "We are well aware that Willie has added pace with the recent signings of Graham McLaren (from Bathgate) and Grant Plenderleith (on loan from Stenhousemuir). But we've got pace in our side as well - and not just up front. Our right full back, David Caine, has plenty pace while our centre halves aren't the slowest in the league either.

"We just have to try and do the basic things right to counter attack the pace Bo'ness have in McLaren, Plenderleith and, of course, Nicky Walker."

Bonnyrigg will be without Craig Fell, who fractured his ankle in training recently, but Bo'ness have a full squad to choose from.

Captain Roger Duffin and Fraser Forrest both turned out for Alloa as trialists against Ayr last weekend, getting welcome game time under their belts.

"Fraser hadn't played for four months so was up for the challenge after our game was called off on the Saturday morning, while Roger was also pleased to get a game after missing out the previous weekend due to work commitments."

Tomorrow's game kicks-off at 2.30pm, as does Musselburgh's match at Olivebank against Kilbirnie Ladeside, who are lying second bottom in the West Region Super League.
