Tennis: Glaswegian Jamie Baker falls at first hurdle

There was disappointment for Glaswegian Jamie Baker today, when his bid to reach the second round of a grand slam for the first time in his career ended in failure after a 7-6 (7/5), 7-5, 6-2 defeat to Lukas Rosol at the Australian Open.

Baker, who came through qualifying, had his chances and served for the first two sets but could not shrug off a man who beat Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon last year.

After a serve-dominated start, Baker broke for a 6-5 lead only for Rosol to immediately wipe out the deficit and then take the set to a tie-break which the Czech then claimed.

And it was a similar tale in the second when Baker squandered an early break and a 5-3 lead. Again Rosol hit back to rattle off four games on the trot to take a commanding two-set advantage.

And when Baker dropped serve early in the third there was to be no reprieve for the world No. 246.
