Tennis: Brown begins at city tourney

EDINBURGH'S Mhairi Brown was entering the AEGON pro-series £6,500 tennis tournament at Craiglockhart today at the start of a journey which she hopes will eventually lead to the Delhi Commonwealth Games, writes BILL LOTHIAN.

Brown has been given a wildcard into the main draw where she was due to play Great Britain's Cassidy Crawford in the second game on Court 5. A win would provide more ranking points to improve chances of a Games entry.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh teenager Emma Devine, 15, failed in her bid to join compatriot Joanna Henderson (Aberdeen) in emerging from qualifying when she lost 6-1, 3-6. 3-6 to Romanian second seed Patricia Chirea.

Emma now heads off to Turkey for a couple of tournaments as part of a Great Britain junior squad.
