Tennis: Baker and Watson win EL Open titles

Braid teenager Patrick Baker is savouring a breakthrough title success on the Scottish senior tennis circuit after beating Borderer Michael Fairburn 6-1, 6-1 to claim the East Lothian Open men's singles at North Berwick.

The victory capped a double for Baker who also claimed the under-18 crown while, coincidentally, St Serfs' Hannah Watson completed a junior/senior singles double in the women's event.

It was the second successive year Miss Watson, who beat Blackhall's Kirsty Venter 6-2, 7-5, had won the senior title.

Organiser Mark Gaffney said: "The younger players came to the fore with Neil Harden (St Serfs) the oldest quarter-finalist, aged 28. Also, Barnton Park's Lloyd Greatorex-Watson, who is still under-16, reached the semis of the men's singles.

"For Patrick Baker it was another demonstration of all-round sporting talent as he also excels in cricket and football."

Edinburgh's Alexandra Hunter won both the girls' under-12 and under-14 singles.
